On July 4, UaGBC conducted a seminar on «green» standards in design and construction for architects, developers and contractors. The seminar was organized with the support of the National Union of Architects and the German Green Building Council (DGNB).

The speakers shared their insights on sustainable architecture and construction and discussed the importance of implementation of «green» principles in professional practice.

In his speech, Michael Dax, Director of DGNB International System, a division of the German Green Building Council, stressed the need to reduce energy consumption in order to bring down the levels of the ÑÎ2 emissions and preserve the climate. Seminar participants were introduced to the international practice of construction of passive houses, ÑÎ2-neutral buildings and buildings which are capable of producing more energy than they consume.

Wolfgang Lukaschek, Head of Sustainability Department at DELTA Holding (Austria), talked about the importance of implementation of green building principles starting at the earliest possible stages of project development and concept design. According to him, architects and designers are the ones who have been entitled with the leading role in creation of sustainable built environment as they not only have to create energy efficient buildings which satisfy the requirements of international certification systems, but also have to continuously work with clients to ensure adherence to green building principles throughout the duration of the whole project.

Stanislav Shulga, Managing Director of UaGBC, presented key aspects of management of green building projects and involvement of a «green» auditor. He informed that «green» certificates are awarded to buildings which have become operational and which have successfully passed all the necessary tests. According to Mr. Shulga, there are already two real estate projects inUkrainewhich are in the process of DGNB certification. The certification process is being led by DELTA ProjektconsultUkraineand preliminary results are expected to be received in the fall of this year.

According to professionals from KNAUF Insulation Ukraine, it is very important that «green» real estate projects are built using ecological and durable recycled-content building materials manufactured with minimum energy expenditures. «A «green» auditor has to make sure that materials specified in the project satisfy the requirements of the selected international certification system and that they are the ones which actually get used during the construction process», – said Anna Dukhno, Business Development Manager at KNAUF.

Fritz Hohnerlein, leader of the German Energy Efficiency Pilot Project inUkraine, shared information about energy design and importance of adaptation of a building’s envelope to local climate conditions.  For example, as a result of correct building orientation on the site, one can utilize direct sunlight in the winter for heating and use sun shading devices to reduce cooling and ventilation costs in the summer. Additionally, Mr. Hohnerlein recommends paying close attention to critical building joints which are susceptible to creation of thermal bridges and air leaks.
